Drop 4 at the Melbourne Museum
Just before lunch I headed into the Museum for Drop 4. I love Museums, they’re one of my favourite cultural institutions anywhere in the world. Today, being Sunday, the Museum was filled with visitors, which is awesome but makes it harder to put a Journal down, photograph it and walk away without anyone seeing!
The first drop, Journal 3, I left on the seat and walked away, a man came running after me saying “Excuse me, did you leave your book back there on the seat? Or is it someone else’s?” I smiled at him and said “Nah, it’s someone else’s”, which was absolutely true, Journal 3 isn’t mine, it’s for whoever finds and takes it.
Journal 3 and Journal 16 hand back
Today, flying in via post, was Journal 3. It’s Inscriber is currently off on an art filled adventure and had taken their Journal with them. To post it back, they had to make a special trip via boat to the post office! It arrived safe and sound and is now in the pile of Journals waiting to go out…
Then, around noon, I went in to RRR to chat to alicia sometimes about Sharing Ink on her radio show Aural Text. While there I met with an Inscriber to return their Journal. These two things were in no way related!
Journal 3 and Journal 4
Today I spent the day at Visible Studios, a week long Artist in Residence project I’ve curated for Federation Square. A number of artists, including myself, have transported a bare-bones version of their studios into the gallery space in the Atrium.
After spending a couple of hours setting up the space and getting things ready, I started cutting and gluing a number of Journal covers.
Next, I started sewing some Journals together, the final stage in the making of each book.
This is Journal 3, the first with black stitching. When I bought the black book thread, I wasn’t sure if I was going to use it, but it worked so well with the bold black lines of this journal cover that I couldn’t resist.
This is Journal 4, finished and against the glass of the space. I love the one white stick in the top left corner of this journal.
Tomorrow I’m heading in to sew more journals and make more art. Drop by if you’re in town and check it out
